It's America's Night Out Against Crime! The 4th Annual Union Township National Night Out (NNO), a unique crime/drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, was held Tuesday, Aug. 3, at Veterans' Memorial Park. On a national scale, last year's NNO campaign involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from more than 15,000 communities in all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. In all, more than 36 million people participated in National Night in 2009.
While Union Township's participants don't number quite that many, the celebration has grown exponentially in the four years it has been celebrated. While the number of attendees is still in question, there is no dispute that this year's event attracted more than ever before. 2,000 hot dogs, 800 hamburgers, and over 500 ears of corn were served. That does not count other foods available, including the popular SnoCone and Cotton Candy booths.
The Dunkin' Booth, Fire Safety Trailer, and DUI goggles, among the many games and activities available, were big hits. As always, a highlight of the evening was the landing by University Medical Center Air Care of McGruff, the Crime Dog. A dual delight, kids lined up both to meet the celebrity, and to walk through the helicopter.
All the treats and fun are designed to bring the community together to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in local anti-crime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police/community partnerships, and send a message to criminals, letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Toward this end, many local businesses and organizations manned booths offering information and freebies geared toward safer communities.
